Bar Coding For Accuracy
By Joe DeCarlo
Bar code and RFID technology can be applied in different ways to offer many advantages to your business.  It can make your people faster and more efficient.  It's certainly much easier than recording information by hand.  It can even secure your data.  But the very first and best advantage is accuracy.
We've all heard the phrase "garbage in, garbage out."  It's a glib way of saying "the system is only as good as the information you put into it."  The value of your software system is directly affected by the quality of the data it has to work with.  It pays to support and promote accurate data capture and data entry.
Hand writing is naturally prone to human error.  Even when we write something down correctly, it can later be misinterpreted by another human being.  The advent of keyboards and keypads was a definite improvement, but they don't call it a "typo" for nothing.
A bar code scanner gets it right every time.
When a bar code scanner makes a mistake, it's called a "mis-read."  Chances are you've never heard this term.  That's because, beginning with the invention of bar codes in the 1940's, the industry has worked to devise  new bar codes and to invent new scanning technologies with the aim of eliminating mis-reads.  Today's scanners are so accurate that we take them for granted.  We're talking millions of scans without a single error.
Imagine:  No more hand written serial numbers, illegible notations, and guessing "is that a one or a seven?"  Bar coding reduces paperwork, eliminates data entry, and makes information available immediately.  Mobile scanning systems validate important details like part numbers, lot numbers, and quantities at the exact time and place work is performed.
You can prevent mistakes before they ever happen.  That's why bar coding offers such a high return on investment.
