CONFERENCE BREAKOUT SESSIONS
The following breakout sessions are scheduled for Expandability 2005.
Expandable For Accountants
Expandable classroom training instructor Beth Herner presents T-accounting for two of the most frequently asked questions on the Expandable hotline. Beth will teach you how to use the Order Class and Product Line Parameters to manage the COGS and Revenue accounts on a Sales Order.
Network Security Using “Best of Breed” Products
Spam, spyware and computer viruses are a daily threat to network security and your corporate assets. Find out from expert Expandable users and IT professionals the wealth of firewall tools, appliances and techniques that help you maximize system and network security.
Month End Close Roundtable
Expandable’s Director of Customer Support, Jeannie Fitzgerald, moderates a discussion on month-end close procedures and provides best practices for minimizing month-end headaches. Bring your questions and observations to spark group discussion.
Audit Trails and Advanced System Security
Audit trails and system security are key factors in gaining Sarbanes Oxley and/or FDA compliance. Expandable's Manager of the Professional Services Group, Bill Humphrey, illustrates the security benefits of the Audit Log module and differentiates between Microsoft's password encryption and Expandable's Advanced Security Module.
Tips and Tricks for Beginners
As with most complex tools, 80% of your productivity in Expandable can be accomplished using just 20% of the features. Expandable’s training instructor, Beth Herner, will illustrate how you can increase your productivity in Expandable by mastering just a few simple tools. Query by Example (QBE), Inquiries and hot keys are featured.
Reconciling Your Cash Accounts
Gisli Hermannsson of IP Unity illustrates how he reconciles checking account transactions and bank statements using the Expandable bank reconciliation program.
Creating Excel Pivot Tables Directly from the Expandable Database Using ODBC
Excel is arguably the single most-used software tool in the business world. Using ODBC, you can import Expandable data to Excel pivot tables. In those tables the data can easily be resorted, summarized, drilled into and re-dimensioned in a variety of ways. Replace a dozen reports with a single pivot table and let users view the right information in the mode that makes most sense to them.
The Power of Expandable MRP Applied to Consumer Products
Tom’s of Maine manufactures all-natural consumer products (like toothpaste, deodorant, and mouthwash). We use Expandable MRP as the engine to translate our forecast into a production plan and a purchasing plan. This session will cover our business process around Expandable MRP that achieves better than 99% customer service levels with minimum inventory. We will also cover the details required to 1. prepare the data to run MRP and 2. utilize the data coming out of the MRP. Those details include uploading the forecast, using order quantities/lead times/bills of material, setting the safety stock levels, using the Workbench feature, and creating Crystal Report outputs bucketed by month.
SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services
Microsoft provides free server-based reporting software with SQL Server 2000 that you can use to author, manage, and deliver both paper-oriented and Web–based reports. Clarice Buckmaster provides insight on how she uses the tools to build reports for ECCO outside of Crystal Reports.
Customizing the Executive Information Module

Expandable’s Executive Information (EI) module can be customized to track key metrics that monitor the health and performance of your operation. Expandable support representative, Bob Amalfitano, delivers an informative look at customizing the EI tool, including linking information out to Excel, Crystal, pivot tables and graphs.

BYOM - "Bring Your Own Metrics" - Bob will also showcase any matrix that a user brings with them along with any supporting report. If you would like to share your handy work with others bring yours with you. You can join Bob and show it or have him do it for you.
Preparing for Your Annual Physical
PREPARE, PREPARE, PREPARE! Don’t wait until the day of your physical inventory to learn how to use the tools provided by Expandable. Support representative John Yarbrough provides tips and suggestions for effective inventory management, including cycle counting and wall-to-wall physical inventory.
Finance Roundtable
Jeannie Fitzgerald and Pat Hales of Expandable will co-chair this special interest group (SIG) discussion focusing on finance and accounting issues. This forum is key to sharing tips and tricks with peers and identifying techniques practiced by the most experienced users. Bring your questions, comments and tips.
What's New in Rel 8.1
Expandable training and support representatives outline features added to the latest release of Expandable, including new tables and new fields in existing tables. An overview of the added Rights Options and an introduction to the new optional Consignment Inventory module will also be presented.
Building SalesLogix Inquiries
SalesLogix Query Builder is a powerful tool for ensuring proper management of customer contacts and sales accounts. Expandable's SalesLogix experts will provide an introduction to Query Builder including creating dynamic groups, releasing groups to individual users and sending data out to external programs.
SalesLogix and Expandable: Bi-directional Integration
This session presents a high level review of the integration touch points between Expandable and SalesLogix including how to generate the RMA record (both NS and RA Sales Order) from within the SupportLogix client. Key features covered: Entering Sales Orders from the sales client, generating quotes from SalesLogix accessing Expandable data, transferring Accounts from SalesLogix into the Expandable system and accessing Expandable data within the sales client.
Labor Time Collection
Expandable's Labor Time Collection module tracks labor information as workers clock in and out of specific Jobs. Expandable's Bill Humphrey goes in-depth to explore the finer points of deploying the module and capturing labor data via ID badge barcode scanning or keyboard entry.
Expandable Productivity Tools
Bill Humphrey demonstrates several productivity tools recently developed by his professional services group including the BOM upload, Part Plan Upload, Journal Voucher Budget Upload, Shipping Interface and Engineering BOMs.
Expandable Report Manager
Expandable support representative Bob Amalfitano shows how Report Manager improves data retrieval with custom prompts and parameters for standard reports, how to develop work flow categories and how to incorporate your custom crystal reports into a seamless menu-driven reporting system. Also addressed is cost justification and conversion times for custom reports.
Collaborative Manufacturing Using iSpring and Expandable
Material supply processes are arguably one of the biggest areas of cost for manufacturers. David Ginsberg of Sonic Manufacturing describes how he minimizes procurement costs and reduces material inventory by practicing collaborative manufacturing using iSpring to facilitate approvals, manage exceptions, handle supplier response and perform alternate supplier checks.
JIT Production Techniques Using Expandable
Electronic Controls Company (ECCO) has integrated JIT principles by creating work cell demand reports that reflect real demand for each production line based on real orders. Susan Town and Expandable's Kevin Bobst explain the JIT techniques you can employ in building production floor work cell reports using Crystal.
Integrating Expandable with PLM for Complete Change Management
Product lifecycle management (PLM) technology provides a means for managing product data in a single, secure location. PLM is helping companies improve their overall product development process by improving communication, eliminating inefficiencies and reducing development cycles. Integration between ERP and PLM systems offers instant access to the most current product data, delivering the visibility necessary to effectively manage bill of materials (BOMs), engineering changes (ECOs), documentation, and product data.
With the interface to Expandable, you can manage your ECO process in the Omnify PLM system, electronically communicating change requirements for fast review and approval. Omnify Software’s bi-directional integration with Expandable offers a single database to combine your engineering and business data, allowing you to publish item master data, vendor data, BOM, and ECO/Change information to Expandable as well as read data from Expandable (Costs, Inventory, Status, Vendor data) into Omnify. This session will review the concept and benefits of integrating ERP and PLM environments.
FRx® – Beginning Tips and Tricks for Financial Reporting
Targeted towards new and existing users of the Microsoft® Business Solutions – FRx, this tutorial provides a review of basic FRx report writing fundamentals and valuable report design tips.
What’s New with FRx?
This session introduces the new features and functionality that have been added to FRx in the last year, including the new FRx Report Manager and FRx Report wizard.
Includes an in-depth review of Microsoft Business Solutions – FRx Forecaster, the quick, easy way to control the entire budgeting and planning process. With FRx Forecaster, firms can create budgets that are accurate, realistic and achievable.
Document Management with Powerway
It's critical that only the most current versions of enterprise-wide documents be published, but it's not easy to manage revisions when multiple individuals access documents to make changes. Expandable's Kent DeWolf shows how Powerway® Document Manager provides secure document and data control, document revision history and a distinct audit trail for each document.
"Webcasting" Expandable Alerts
Critical email alerts can be overlooked when delivered into a mail box full of unrelated messages. KnowledgeSync’s “webcasting” technology enables your organization to monitor notifications that are dynamically posted to one or more HTML (web) pages. Expandable’s Kevin Prim shows how to consolidate alerts in a central location where your employees, business partners or other key constituents can monitor events using a web browser.
EDI 101
It's hard to get excited about a technology that pundits claimed would disappear when XML was released to the supply chain community, yet Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) has retained enormous staying power. Many suppliers are learning that in order to continue serving major customers, they need to embrace this mature, yet sometimes intimidating technology. This session, presented by Mark Kraus of Tom's of Maine, will present the basic elements and concepts behind EDI — the acronyms used, the software required — and will explore options for implementing EDI at your organization.
Rolling Up and Rolling Over
Support representative Kevin Bobst demystifies the costing process in Expandable by providing guidelines for when and how to perform cost roll-ups. Bring your questions and suggestions.
Prepare To Be Regulated! Lead-Free, Recycling, and Competitive Advantage
The European Union has been leading the world-wide drive for the electronics industry to become more environmentally friendly. Through directives like Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) we are being asked (or told) to design product differently and to manage the entire product lifecycle from an environmentally conscious perspective.
Supplier and component selection is no longer just a supply chain issue; it now becomes a potential legal and market issue as well. How does this impact product design? What are the data management issues? What can you do to make sure your products comply? How can your company turn this into a competitive advantage? Michael Kirschner of consultancy Design Chain Associates walks you thought the challenges and opportunities.
